The Theatre of Blood is a raid located beneath the castle of Ver Sinhaza. It is a large arena used by the ruling vampyres to host blood sports. The only hard requirement to participate in the raid is the completion of the Priest in Peril quest to be able to access Morytania. The raid is featured prominently in the quest A Night at the Theatre.

Here, the citizens of Meiyerditch are encouraged to go to the theatre and fight against the various experiments and abominations contained within, with the promise of freedom from the blood tithes and the right to leave Morytania should they succeed. The reward is revealed to be a ruse as the vampyres are unwilling to let go of their primary food source.

While the theatre is only open to citizens of Meiyerditch, this rule is rarely enforced. The vampyres are more entertained by outsiders than the citizens themselves, seeing as these are better prepared compared to the civilians who are inexperienced and poorly equipped.

Mechanics

Bosses

File:Theatre of Blood - wave complete.ogg

The Theatre of Blood is a linear raid. Thus, there is no randomization involved, and the bosses will always be encountered in this order.

  1. The Maiden of Sugadinti (level-940)
  2. Pestilent Bloat (level-870)
  3. Nylocas Vasilias (level-800)
  4. Sotetseg (level-995)
  5. Xarpus (level-960)
  6. Verzik Vitur (level-1040, final boss)

Despite some of the bosses being spiders, vampyres and dark beasts, they will not count towards a Slayer task when killed inside the Theatre; thus, the slayer helmet and black mask bonuses have no effect.

The bosses will also have their hitpoints scaled depending on the team size. With a team of three or fewer players the bosses will have 75% of their original hitpoints, with four players the bosses will have 87.5% of their original hitpoints and a team of five players will leave the bosses' hitpoints unchanged.

Death within the Theatre

If players die within the theatre, they are placed outside the fighting area, and can only proceed if other team members succeed in completing the current challenge. If the entire team is killed, players will lose all unprotected items; these can later be reclaimed from a storage chest (similar to Torfinn's item storage) for a cost of 100,000 coins. Untradeable items that are normally kept on death will be placed in the item reclamation chest upon complete team death in the theatre.

If players die a second time without reclaiming the items in the chest, they will be permanently lost, unless the death occurs within a minigame deemed safe, such as Pest Control.

Dying in the Theatre of Blood is a dangerous death - Hardcore Ironmen who die within the theatre will lose their Hardcore status, regardless of whether the team successfully completes the challenges or not. Any disconnection or logout during a fight is treated as a death, and will likewise result in loss of Hardcore status. Should a player logout when not in an encounter, such as in the hallways of the theatre, the player's death will be treated as a safe death. Upon logging back in to an unsafe death, the game will attempt to reunite the player with their party and, if successful, will place the player in purgatory. If unsuccessful, the player will be treated with a full death and will have to pay the item reclamation fee to retrieve any items lost.

All normal forms of teleportation within the Theatre are blocked; however, the Mysterious Stranger outside sells escape crystals for 75,000 coins each, and is the only item players can use to teleport away from the Theatre safely.

Other modes

Entry Mode

An easy variant of the Theatre of Blood intended for beginners to warm themselves up and gain experience before attempting the Theatre in Normal Mode. Every enemy encountered is significantly weaker than their Normal Mode counterparts and the mechanics themselves are adjusted to be less fatal.

Similarly to the Chambers of Xeric and Tombs of Amascut (without death-changing invocations), players have unlimited attempts at the bosses. If the team wipes in a room, they will be given bandages.

As a result of being easier than Normal Mode, raids completed in this manner give 80% less loot than Normal Mode, with no chance of obtaining any unique item, including the Lil' zik pet.

Hard Mode

A hard variant of the Theatre of Blood is also available for players up to the challenge. Similarly to the Chambers of Xeric "Challenge Mode", all enemies in the Theatre of Blood are significantly stronger, this time with new or modified mechanics in play. Completion of Hard Mode can yield Sanguine dust to reskin Lil' Zik, and the Holy and Sanguine ornament kits to recolour the sanguinesti staff, ghrazi rapier and scythe of vitur, with the latter kit only working for the scythe.

Teams are also awarded with 15% more common drops when received (with an additional 15% if the raid is completed within the challenge time), along with a 13% chance of obtaining unique items (compared to the standard 11%),[1] with the avernic defender hilt being less common in Hard Mode than Normal Mode in order to make the other uniques slightly more common.

In order to access Hard Mode, players must have completed the Theatre in Normal Mode at least once.

Rewards

Upon defeating Verzik Vitur, a trapdoor will open under her throne, leading to her treasure vault.

Inside will be up to five large chests based on the amount of players in the team, with each player being able to loot one chest. An arrow will point to which chest is for that player to search.

If a unique reward is obtained, a purple aura will emit from the chest, much like how the ray of light turns purple for the player who obtains a unique reward in the Chambers of Xeric. If no unique reward is found, the chest will contain three rolls from the common drop table. Of the unique rewards that players can obtain from the chest include:

Vials of blood are also a common drop obtainable in addition to the above. They can be used to charge the scythe of Vitur and create bastion and battlemage potions.

Players can find books during the raid, as well as on the grand bookshelves in the treasure vault.

Performance & records

Performance Details

Performance Details for a performance within the Theatre of Blood.

Upon entering the treasure vault, players may read the strategy table by the grand bookshelves to view the overall performance of the team, while spectators can read the war table to view it.

Here, players may view the death counts of each team member, the total deaths in the performance, as well as the time spent in each wave.

The Most Valuable Player (MVP) is listed on the top of the interface, and is determined based on the performance of the individual player, such as damage dealt and the number of deaths.

The challenge time (the time spent fighting the bosses) and the overall time, which includes the time spent between waves, can be seen on the bottom of the interface.

Scoreboard

File:Theatre of Blood scoreboard.png
The Theatre of Blood scoreboard found next to the entrance of the theatre.

Next to the entrance to the Theatre of Blood is a scoreboard, which displays personal and global statistics for the Theatre of Blood, such as number of attempts, number of completions, number of deaths, and completion times.

Theatre of Blood records

An official records page existed, which showed all-time global records, such as most completions by an individual and total Hardcore Ironman deaths within the theatre, as well as fastest completion times for each boss and the raid as a whole. The page has since been decommissioned.

Music unlocked

Players are not required to participate in the raid to unlock all of the music, and may spectate one to do so.

  • The release date for the Theatre of Blood was silently announced in an update on 3 May 2018 via a leaflet just north of the Ectofuntus, which displayed the following message when read:
File:Theatre of Blood leaflet teaser.png
The leaflet found north of the Ectofuntus.
Lady Verzik cordially invites you to the Theatre of Blood!
The greatest collection of powerful beasts are here for your entertainment.

Tickets available from June 7th!

  • The date was then changed to "Pentember 15th" after a player complaint of the leaflet not using the canonical in-game calendar.
  • Upon the release of the Theatre of Blood, there was a bug which would cause players to drop the item in the top right corner of their inventory on the floor upon death, if they were in possession of Dawnbringer. This bug was hotfixed within one hour of discovery. In one instance, the player was an ironman whose Armadyl chestplate was picked up by their teammate, and as they could not trade it back, Jagex offered to swap the item to its owner.[2]
  • Its name may be a reference to the 1973 film Theatre of Blood.
  • Its subject matter may be derived from the Théâtre des Vampires, from Anne Rice’s series The Vampire Chronicles.
  • The Theatre of Blood is the only raid that:
    • Lacks raid-unique supplies; the supplies offered are the same players can use, make and sell.
    • Cannot be teleported out of through normal methods.
    • Is the only non-customisable raid.
    • Has no unique rewards that gives an additional/improved effect in the raid.

Mod Ayiza: "We have so far had two confirmed instances of this occurring, and in one instance (this one), a player has lost an item due to no fault of their own. This item went to another member of the party. We have since removed that item from them and will be returning it to the player who initially lost the item, as they are an Ironman."
