This is a documentation subpage for Template:External.
It contains usage information, categories, and other content that is not part of the original template page.
Template:External invokes function main in Module:Top icons using Lua.

The External template adds links to other wikipedias beside the "Discussion" tab above an article's title. The links are not added to the mobile skin.

Usage

External can be used with either unnamed parameters or named parameters. Parameter order does not matter - the order the buttons are shown in will always be RuneScape, then RuneScape Classic, then Meta Weird Gloop, then Wikipedia.

If linking to another wiki with an identical page title, specify the wiki's shorthand name in unnamed parameters:

{{External|rs|rsc|meta|wp}}

where

  • rs creates a link to the RuneScape Wiki
  • rsc creates a link to the RuneScape Classic Wiki
  • meta creates a link to Meta Weird Gloop Wiki
  • wp creates a link to Wikipedia
    • Note that the Wikipedia link should not be used for content pages such as the cat or duck page, but for pages specifically about real-world subjects, such as Jagex or The Carlyle Group.

If the page title on the other wiki is not the same, use the above as named parameters, with the value being the correct name.

{{External|rs=Page title|rsc=Page title|meta=Page title|wp=Page title}}

Examples

An example of this template in use can be found at the top of the page, where the buttons link to Template:External/doc on RuneScape and RuneScape Classic. It is produced by the following:

{{External|rs|rsc}}

To link to specific pages on RuneScape Classic and Wikipedia, but not on Meta Weird Gloop:

{{External|rsc=Draynor Village|meta|wp=Barack Obama}}
